Review: Rise of the Fire Tamer (The Wordwick Games #1) by Kailin Gow

Don't forget - Every Free Chance Book Reviews has moved to http://everyfreechance.com/

Rise of the Fire Tamer (The Wordwick Games #1)
written by Kailin Gow
published by The Edge

find it here: Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iBooks, Goodreads

Why did I pick this book: I had participated in the blog tour hosted by I Am a Reader, Not a Writer. (I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Did I enjoy this book: This book was okay. The premise was good and sounded so promising. Unfortunately, Rise of the Fire Tamer did not meet my expectations. It just seemed underdeveloped and very predictable.

For a game that, in order to win, the player must use "magic words," the words were not used or talked about all that often. I was expecting a lot more usage of these words. Shouldn't the players have used these special words more than they did? It just didn't make much sense to me. Words, and their definitions, should have been the focus of this book.

Also, there really weren't any characters that were all that sympathetic or worthy of rooting for. The characters were forgettable. In fact, writing this review, I cannot remember these characters all that well. I could not get behind any of them. A few times, I wanted to like Kat but she failed to deliver. Gemma seemed too pretentious. I wish we would have learned more about these characters...their backgrounds, feelings, hopes, etc. What did their parents think about all of this? Where were the parents? Who the winner was going to be was obvious from the beginning of the game.

Furthermore, there were way too many typos and punctuation mistakes for me. A simple spell-check would have caught quite a few of the mistakes. It was distracting and took away from some of the pleasure of reading this book.

Would I recommend it: I don't think that I would recommend this book.

Will I read it again: I will not.

About the book: After winning a contest for a popular game called Wordwick Games, five teens Gemma, Sparks, Rio, Kat, and Jack, are invited to stay at Wordwick Games inventor Henry Word's mysterious castle and play the newest level of Workwick Games. Little do they know, the castle is the doorway to a wondrous world call Anachronia where words can be used as weapons, power, and commodity. There is unrest in Anachronia, and if the five teens can follow the rules of Wordwick Games and prove to be the best player, one of them will be crowned Ruler of Anachronia.

Book Blast: Moonlit by Jadie Jones (giveaway)

Moonlit
written by Jadie Jones
published by WiDo Publishing

find it here: Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Goodreads

About the book: Eighteen-year-old Tanzy Hightower knows horses, has grown up with them on Wildwood Farm. She also knows not to venture beyond the trees that line the pasture. Things happen out there that can’t be explained. Or undone. Worse, no one but she and the horses can see what lurks in the shadows of the woods. When a moonlit ride turns into a terrifying chase, Tanzy is left to question everything, from the freak accident that killed her father to the very blood in her veins. Broken and confused, she turns to Lucas, a scarred, beautiful stranger, and to Vanessa, a charming new friend who has everything Tanzy doesn’t. But why do they seem to know more about her than she knows herself?

    Praise for Moonlit

"Virginia's trees look like they're burning. Most of them blaze crimson or gold, but some still have a chokehold on their green. I wish they'd give it up already. Leaves are more beautiful when they're dying." And so Moonlit begins. From here the story rolls from one twist to another with many vivid characters whose motives are hard to predict. I found myself being suspicious of everyone, wanting to tell Tanzy to be very careful. The deeper I fell into the plot, the more questions kept rising to the surface. But not to worry, all of my questions were answered. Appropriate for all ages, if you love paranormal fantasy mixed with suspense, mystery and other-worldly romance, you'll love this novel! ~Author Julie Ford

Prologue

The first anniversary of my father’s death was even harder on my mother. Back then, I thought she was haunted most by what she didn’t know. I refused to blame her when she raged above me on our staircase that night, drunk and sad and angry. When she made me promise I’d never ride again. When she hurled a half-full bottle of vodka at my face and it exploded on the wooden stairs at my feet. I hadn’t tried to get out of the way. She had just missed. I wanted to tell her that knowledge was no solace, that what you know can burn inside you until there’s nothing left but guilt and ash. I also wanted to protect her from losing the only piece of him she had left. So I didn’t say a word.

About the author: Georgia native Jadie Jones first began working for a horse farm at twelve years old, her love of horses matched only by her love of books. She went on to acquire a B.A. in equine business management, and worked for competitive horse farms along the east coast. The need to write followed wherever she went. She currently coaches a hunt seat equitation team that competes in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association, and lives with her family in the foothills of north Georgia. When she's not working on the next installment of the Moonlit series, she is either in the saddle or exploring the great outdoors with her daughter. Moonlit is her first book.

Review: Kiss Me (The Keatyn Chronicles #2) by Jillian Dodd

Kiss Me (Keatyn Chronicles #2)
written by Jillian Dodd
published by Bandit Publishing

find it here: Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iBooks, Goodreads

Why did I pick this book:  I participated in the blog tour for Kiss Me but my stop was a review of the first book, Stalk Me. (See my review here.) I am participating in the blog tour for Date Me hosted by AToMR Tours. My post will be up on Friday for Date Me. So, I wanted to read Kiss Me to complete the series. (I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Did I enjoy this book: I did enjoy this book. In fact, I liked it better - yes, better! - than the first book in The Keatyn Chronicles series. Kiss Me kept me reading and I can't wait to see what happens in Date Me.

This installment of The Keatyn Chronicles had me caught up in Keatyn's new life. I like her new life so much more than her Hollywood life. Keatyn was more real in this book. She's growing up a bit, figuring out who she is. I love how strong Keatyn is in this book. She has to deal with a very scary situation and she is dealing rather well. I'm impressed by that. For 16, she could have gone in a very different direction. Keatyn does flirt a lot and can't make up her mind about guys. But I chalk that up to her age.

The new characters are wonderful. Some are like her old friends. Some are completely different. Aiden and Dawson are great love interests for Keatyn. I'm not a big Aiden fan. He seems to run too hot and cold for me. And he is rather immature. Dawson seems like a sweetheart. He's a typical teen-aged boy but he is good for Keatyn. Dallas and Riley are great friends for Keatyn. They are her friends and her brothers (in a way) and I adore them both. They really look after her and want to be her friend...not anything else. Whitney and Peyton seem typical but I like Peyton a lot more at the end of Kiss Me. Whitney is your typical spoiled brat who thinks she is the queen bee.

Are there parts of this book that I still find unbelievable? Yes, but more believable than Stalk Me. I can see drinking and drugs at a boarding school more so than being served at a bar or hotel. I can see the sneaking in and out of the dorms. This boarding school sounds more like college than high school, but I can see it. Can I see a 16 year old buying her own loft in New York City? No, but in this situation, I guess it could happen. Can I see a group of high school kids leaving their school and going away for the weekend to someone's vacation home? Not really, but it works. Can I see a dean taking part in the cafeteria scene? Absolutely not!!! Did that scene make me smile and giggle? Absolutely!!

Would I recommend it: The same as Stalk Me, I would recommend this book to those who like contemporary YA and light reads. Read Stalk Me first though.

Will I read it again: I will not but I am looking forward to reading Date Me.

About the book: I’ve always written scripts for my perfect life.
But no way could I have ever scripted this.
My life is so far from perfect, it’s not even funny.
All because of a stalker.

I’m at a boarding school where I have to lie about who I am.
I can’t see my family.
I’m tutoring a hottie god that tortures me with his smile.
The most popular girl already hates me.
But there’s this boy.
This hot, sweet, sexy boy.
So I’m going to stop trying to script my life and just live it.
Because who knows how long I have left.

About the book: Brooke Wright has only two goals her senior year at Charity Run High School: stay out of trouble and learn to forgive herself for the past. Forgiveness proves elusive, and trouble finds her anyway when she discovers a secret club at school connected to the death of her best friend. She learns that swim team members participate in a “Fantasy Slut League,” scoring points for their sexual acts with unsuspecting girls.

Brooke, wracked with guilt over her friend’s death, decides to infiltrate the league by becoming one of the “unsuspecting girls,” and exact revenge on the boys who stole away her best friend. An unexpected romance complicates her plans, and her dogged pursuit of justice turns her reckless as she underestimates just how far the boys will go to keep their sex club a secret.

(This is a New Adult fiction book with mature themes. It contains graphic sex and language and a description of sexual violence.)

Every Free Chance Book Reviews is pleased to welcome S. Walden, author of Going Under, to the blog today. She is on tour with Xpresso Book Tours has prepared the following guest post for all of you.

Sponge

People like to ask me where I get my ideas for stories.
“From you,” I reply, and they look confused. And then the confusion turns to suspicion.
“Oh really?” they ask tentatively.
“Mmhmm,” I reply. I drum my fingers on my writer’s notebook. (Well, okay. I don’t have a writer’s notebook. I store everything in my head. So I drum my fingers on my head.)
“Sooo . . . what do you have in there?” they ask.
“You’ll find out in my next book.” I smile and wink.
They’re getting scared. “Were you at Kroger last week? Did you see me in the bakery? I swear to God I didn’t do what you think you saw! It was somebody else! Please don’t put that in your book!!”
“Oh, I saw you all right. And it’s sooo going in my book,” I reply.
“You writers!” they scream. “You think you can slap a disclaimer on your books and write whatever you want!”
“Can’t we?”
The truth may shock you. It may scare you. It may piss you off. But your favorite writer? Well, she most likely got some ideas in that favorite book of yours from spying on people. Maybe even you. That’s right. Flat-out, creepy-but-trying-to-look-nonchalant-about-it spying. And it happens every second of the day. You’re just not aware of it.
We’re sponges, see? We soak up everything we come into contact with. Smells, sounds, tastes, conversations. We store these tidbits away (either in our heads or in notebooks) to later develop into characters or plot ideas. Because the bottom line is this: we can only infuse so much of ourselves and our experiences into our characters and stories before they turn utterly tedious or narcissistic. One of my favorite things about Brooke in Going Under is that (aside from her foul mouth) that girl is nothing like me. (And for the record, I like her a whole lot better!)
So who do I spy on? Where do my ideas come from? Well, all over. I’m acquiring ideas all the time (and I should really start writing them down instead of relying so heavily on my memory). One I’ve been trying to work into a story for a long time comes from an acquaintance who described a church for me she used to attend. One located in the deep South. One with a preacher who liked to stand up at the pulpit and call people out for their transgressions during the service:
“Pete! Jimmy saw you down at Pumpkin’s Bar last Friday! Now we all of us in this congregation know that you have an alcohol problem, son! So what were you doin’ at Pumpkin’s?”
All eyes on Pete. Poor, poor Pete.
“Darlene! I done told you to stop gossipin’ about Jimmy’s wife behind her back!”
Jimmy’s wife looks outraged.
“If you’ve got somethin’ to say to her, say it to her face! But make sure you say it in a loving, Christ-like way, of course.”
Yeah, so I’m trying to work that in because it’s too hilarious to be true, but it’s so freaking true. And stories like these are precisely why writers spy. We soak up these events, these real-life people/caricatures, these conversations because they make delicious stories. They add what our imaginations can’t. And when you write realistic fiction, you need that. The world around you becomes your candy store of ideas, and you begin to discover that reality is pretty crazy.
I love reading reviews of realistic fiction that state, “Oh, that isn’t very realistic,” or “That could never happen.” Wanna make a bet? That story you just read is a collection of soaked up people and events sprinkled with the ideas of the author. It may not be one hundred percent true, but it’s pretty darn close.
So the next time you’re out and about, you might want to look over your shoulder. Go ahead and let your eyes dart around. Think twice before you do what you’re just about to do. Because we’re watching. The notebooks are open, people. We’re watching and we’re jotting.
Totally. Creepy.

About the author: S. Walden used to teach English before making the best decision of her life by becoming a full-time writer. She lives in Georgia with her very supportive husband who prefers physics textbooks over fiction and has a difficult time understanding why her characters must have personality flaws. She is wary of small children, so she has a Westie instead. Her dreams include raising chickens and owning and operating a beachside inn on the Gulf Coast (chickens included). When she's not writing, she's thinking about it.

Spotlight: Vidal's Honor by Sherry Gloag (interview, excerpt)

Vidal's Honor
written by Sherry Gloag
published by Astraea Press, LLC

find it here: Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iBooks, Goodreads

About the book: When plunged into a world of spies, agents and espionage during the Peninsula wars, Honor, Lady Beaumont, flees for her life when the French capture her husband at Salamanca, and relies on his batman to arrange her safe passage back to England.

Viscount Charles Vidal is ordered by Robert Dumas, the First Lord of the Admiralty, to travel to Spain and escort the only woman he’s ever loved, Lord Devlin Beaumont’s widow back home before the French discover her whereabouts.

Their journey is fraught by danger, least of all knowing whether they are surrounded by friends or foe. Will they survive long enough to explore the possibility of a future together or will whispers of treason be enough to see Honor dispatched to Tyburn first?

Please enjoy the following excerpt from Vidal's Honor.

While Vidal joked with his cousin, the viscount scanned the room. The smell of fine wine, whiskey and cigar smoke blended into a rich aroma that was as much a part of Whites as the card games, the background chatter, and outbreaks of lewd laughter from the younger members of the club.

One member in particular interested Vidal tonight, and he watched Robert Dundas, second Viscount Melville, and First Lord of the Admiralty, take leave of his friends and head in his direction.

He wondered why the man spent the best part of the night watching his every move, and paused in the act of fobbing his snuff box while he waited for the viscount to join him.

“Take a walk with me?” Although couched as a question, Vidal noted the quiet steel of command in the other man’s voice. Dundas laid a hand on his arm; a companionable gesture for anyone interested enough to observe the two men leaving the club together. “I believe I live not far beyond your own house. I’d appreciate your company, and this is not the place for such a discussion. ”

With an indolent twist of the wrist Vidal returned the modish lacquered box, unopened, to his pocket and nodded agreement. A man’s club was no setting for private conversation, and it was plain the man wanted to talk about something away from flapping ears.

Together they strolled across the room stopping to take leave of several mutual friends.

Every Free Chance Book Reviews is pleased to welcome Sherry Gloag, author of Vidal's Honor, to the blog today. She has answered the following questions for all of you.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book. Because it is a best-selling Regency suspense/mystery romance with captivating characters and an intricate and fast-moving plot.

Where did you get your inspiration for Vidal’s Honor? From my characters, is the quick answer, but as a pantser writer they only ‘gave’ me the opening and then we travelled the rest of the journey together.

Why did you choose to write in the regency romance genre? I cut my reading eyeteeth on Georgette Heyer and always wanted to create something/a book like hers. I’m not sure I ever thought I would actually do it, but love writing in the Regency period, and enjoy the challenge of maintaining the Regency voice, and still keep the stories fresh enough for today’s readers.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects? I admit, I usually try to work on one project at a time, but right now I have at least four on the go. Two involve the royal Gasquet twins, Simeon and Sacha, and are proving very complicated to write as their stories keep intertwining. Two secondary characters, Consuela and Juan, from Vidal’s Honor have demanded I tell their story and once I began, promptly did a runner! The next project is a series of short stories inspired by a book I received from my sister this Christmas about myths and superstitions.

What do you enjoy most about writing? With the exception of the promotional side of writing, I love it all. Sometimes, when I’m blocked, I get a bit frustrated, but have come to recognize the pattern and am learning to go with the flow.

What is your favorite genre to read? It depends on my mood, but romance is a biggie for me.  Generally the cleaner/lighter side of romance, but I also enjoy a good mystery/suspense romance, and of course, Regency romances.

Who is your favorite author? Too many to mention them all, so will go with Georgette Heyer, as already mentioned, Agatha Christie, P.D.James, Ruth Rendell, Nora Roberts, and so many more newer authors.

In your opinion, what is one book that everyone should read? I have tried reading some books friends have described as ‘the one book you must read’ and disliked them intensely, because reading is such a personal experience, so I guess, I’ll pass on this question. Sorry.

Tell us three things about yourself that cannot be found on the internet…at least not found easily.
a - I am grammatically challenged ;-0
b - I enjoy driving
c – Although I dreamed of becoming a published author, I don’t think I ever expected it to happen, let alone end up with a published book tagged as a ‘best-seller.’

About the author: Multi-published author, Sherry Gloag is a transplanted Scot now living in the beautiful coastal countryside of Norfolk, England. She considers the surrounding countryside as extension of her own garden, to which she escapes when she needs "thinking time" and solitude to work out the plots for her next novel. While out walking she enjoys talking to her characters, as long as there are no other walkers close by.

Apart from writing, Sherry enjoys gardening, walking, reading, and cheerfully admits her books tend to take over most of the shelf and floor space in her workroom-cum-office. She also finds crystal craft work therapeutic.

Book Blast: January Black by Wendy S. Russo (spotlight, giveaway)

January Black
written by Wendy S. Russo
published by Crescent Moon Press

find it here: Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Goodreads

About the book: Sixteen-year-old genius Matty Ducayn has never fit in on The Hill, an ordered place seriously lacking a sense of humor. After his school’s headmaster expels him for a small act of mischief, Matty’s future looks grim until King Hadrian comes to his rescue with a challenge: answer a question for a master’s diploma.

More than a second chance, this means freedom. Masters can choose where they work, a rarity among Regents, and the question is simple.

What was January Black?

It’s a ship. Everyone knows that. Hadrian rejects that answer, though, and Matty becomes compelled by curiosity and pride to solve the puzzle. When his search for an answer turns up long-buried state secrets, Matty’s journey becomes a collision course with a deadly royal decree. He's been set up to fail, which forces him to choose. Run for his life with the challenge lost...or call the king’s bluff.

Praise for January Black

Refreshingly intelligent and loads of fun!
I lost a few hours as I read this book. It's a Young Adult novel that is refreshingly and astonishingly intelligent, and the love story is perfectly played out.
~Christine Ashworth, Amazon Review

The mystery was intriguing - I loved how Wendy Russo weaved in all her secrets throughout the book, how she incorporated just enough to keep you reading, while never actually divulging much of anything. I was guessing for most of it and that's pretty hard to make me do.
~Julie, Clean Teen Reads

Wendy Russo has created a masterpiece.
~Ivan Amberlake, Author

Book Trailer

About the author: Wendy S. Russo got her start writing in the sixth grade. That story involved a talisman with crystals that had to be found and assembled before bad things happened, and dialog that read like classroom roll call. Since then, she’s majored in journalism (for one semester), published poetry, taken a course on short novels, and watched most everything ever filmed by Quentin Tarantino. A Wyoming native transplanted in Baton Rouge, Wendy works for Louisiana State University as an IT analyst. She’s a wife, a mom, a Tiger, a Who Dat, and she falls asleep on her couch at 8:30 on weeknights.
