They have a boat, but they also have a problem: Poseidon can’t swim and is terrified of the water (well, really of the creatures that lurk in its depths). The group faces danger after danger as they battle singing sirens, a fishy and ferocious Titan named Oceanus, and people-eating monsters sent by Cronus himself. Can Poseidon overcome his fears and help his fellow heroes escape Cronus and his cronies?

Praise for Heroes in Training

"Readers will gobble this down and look for more, make no myth take."
~ Kirkus

“This is a fun read, casting Zeus in the role of relatable kid, and there is a nice balance between his primary goal of survival and his sense of destiny and adventure. . . Share this title, and likely more to come, with those still too young for Percy Jackson’s adventures.”
~ School Library Journal

#4 Hyperion and the Great Balls of Fire

Aladdin Paperbacks (ages 6-9)

Zeus and the Thunderbolt of Doom (Book 1)

After pulling a magical thunderbolt from a stone, ten-year-old Zeus goes on the adventure of a lifetime in this thrilling start to a brand-new series! The terrible Titans--merciless giants who enjoy snacking on humans--have dominated the earth and put the world into chaos. But their rule is about to be put to the test as a group of young Olympians discover their powers and prepare to righteously rule the universe....

Ten-year-old Zeus is mystified (and super-annoyed) by the fact that he keeps getting hit by lightening. Every. Single. Year. He also longs for adventure, as he has never been far from the cave where he grew up.

Zeus gets his wish--and a lot more than he bargained for--when he is kidnapped by dangerous, giant Titans! In self-defense, he grabs the first thing he sees--an actual thunderbolt he pulls from a stone that is covered in mysterious markings. Zeus is the only one who can decipher the markings, and sets off on a quest to rescue his youthful fellow Olympians from the evil Cronus. Armed with his trusty thunderbolt (named Bolt, of course), Zeus is on an adventure of a lifetime--and a journey to fulfill his destiny as King of the Gods.

Hades and the Helm of Darkness (Book 3 coming April 2013)

The Heroes in Training are entering the Underworld—if Hades can conquer his canine fears, that is.

The Underworld usually isn’t really meant to be a fun place—but tell that to Hades! He loves the dark and the stinky smell of sulfur. However, there is one thing that Hades is not a fan of: dogs. And when Zeus and his fellow Olympians encounter Cerberus—a snarling, three-headed dog—Hades must conquer his fears and tame the hound so everyone can continue into the Underworld and deposit their Titan prisoner, Oceanus, back where he belongs!

But with magical water that causes forgetfulness, hot beds of lava, and another epic battle with two more Titans standing in their way, will Zeus and his heroes make it out of the Underworld with everyone intact?

About the author, Joan Holub: I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children's books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children's book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts -- Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children's books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

GIVEAWAY!! Spotlight: Defining Moments by Faye Hicks with an interview

Defining Moments
written by Faye Hicks
published by Faye Hicks

find it here: Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iBooks, Goodreads

About the book - from Goodreads: Scientist Ellie Ward has discovered a portal to the past. In fact, she discovered it at her childhood home when she was nine and she's been using it to extract herself from bad situations ever since. Each time it's returned her to the 'defining moment' in her past - the point in time where a bad decision set her on the path to tragedy. The problem is, Ellie never knows what her defining moments were and so she never has any idea how much of her life she's going to have to repeat to avoid her latest ordeal. When Ellie's research takes her to a remote area of northern Canada, she faces yet another crisis when her small plane crashes in the bush. Seriously injured and stranded more than 2000 miles from her window to the past, this time Ellie has no way to rewind the clock.

Every Free Chance Book Reviews is pleased to welcome Faye Hicks, author of Defining Moments, to the blog today. She has answered the following questions for all of you.

Where did you get your inspiration for Defining Moments?
I’ve always been intrigued at how seemingly innocuous decisions can end up changing a person’s entire life and I’ve often wondered what my own life might be like now, if I’d made different choices at my own ‘defining moments’.  Also, I enjoy books that include just a tiny hint of the paranormal - especially time-travel - so I thought it might be fun to write a story that combined these two ideas.

Did you have to do a lot of research for Defining Moments?
Not really – I grew up in the Maritimes (in eastern Canada) and I’ve since spent a lot of time working in northern Canada, so all of the settings in the book were quite familiar to me.  Much of the background info I needed to write the story came from my own experiences at work or at play, and the rest just came from my imagination.  That’s the great thing about writing fiction – you just make it up!

Please tell us, in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
If you like adventure, time-travel, romance, tragedy, and humor then Defining Moments will give you hours of riveting entertainment!

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’ve just finished a couple of short story collections.  One is called ‘Who Says You Can’t Herd Cats?’ - it’s about the many quirky and comical cats that my husband and I have rescued over the past few decades.  The second, called ‘A Day in the Life of a Professor’, is about some of my strange and comical experiences as an engineering professor. I’m currently working on my second novel; it’s a thriller about a woman who disappears for several months and the emotional crisis her husband and daughters experience as a result.

I see in your biography that you are a professor of engineering. What made you want to write fiction?
I’ve actually wanted to be a writer since I was a teen. Story ideas are constantly popping into my mind – especially in my dreams – and I’ve got scraps of paper stuffed in drawers and cupboards all over the house with these ‘idea seeds’ jotted down on them. About five years ago, I finally decided it was time to see if I could turn some of those ideas into a novel and so Defining Moments was born!

What do you enjoy most about writing? About teaching?
The thing I love most about creative writing is having the opportunity to entertain people – it’s a huge thrill when someone tells me that one of my stories made them laugh or that it evoked a strong emotional response.

For me, the best part about teaching is getting to spend time with young people. My students are so bright and enthusiastic – that makes it a lot of fun.

What is your favorite genre to read?
I enjoy all types of fiction but I especially like reading British mysteries, scientific thrillers, and science fiction.

Who is your favorite author?
I have so many, it’s hard to choose just one. In the mystery genre, I like PD James, Reginald Hill, Peter Robinson, Deborah Crombie, and Elizabeth George. For sci-fi, I especially enjoy Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clark, and Robert J. Sawyer. I’m also a huge fan of both Stephen King and James Herriot.

In your opinion, what is one book that everyone should read?
Oh wow – can I say Defining Moments?   I definitely think that everyone should read that one!  ;-)

Tell us three things about yourself that cannot be found on the internet…at least not found easily.
It’s actually kind of scary that I am having a hard time thinking of three things that aren’t already ‘out there’, but here goes:
             1.    My favorite book is Stephen King’s, The Stand; I’ve read it at least 20 times.
             2.    My favorite movie is When Harry Met Sally; I’ve watched it about a million
                   times.
             3.    I have an adorable little 3-legged dog named “Piglet” – I’ll be writing about her
in a future short story collection.

Thanks for the opportunity to visit your blog today!

About the author: Faye is a Canadian writer who moonlights as an engineering professor.  She grew up in eastern Canada (New Brunswick), then moved out west to Alberta in the early 1980s.  She lives on an acreage (the ‘Cat Ranch’) near Edmonton, Alberta with her husband, Les, and their furry family of rescued cats and dogs.  Faye enjoys writing both fiction and creative non-fiction.  In addition to her first novel, Defining Moments, Faye’s other two books, Who Says you Can’t Herd Cats? and A Day in the Life of a Professor are available as eBooks and in paperback.  Faye is currently working on her second novel.

Every Free Chance Book Reviews is pleased to welcome Vanessa Morgan, author of GPS with Benefits, to the blog today. She has prepared the following guest post for all of you.

Thank you for having me on your blog today. I'm truly honored to be here!

How many people do you know that make jokes about their GPS device or even talk to it?   Nearly everyone, right?

Also, GPS devices already know where you are and how fast you are driving. Who says that, in the near future, they won't be able to know what you look at and what you say.

These thoughts form the basis of my new release, GPS with Benefits, in which a womanizer purchases a new GPS device, not knowing that it has a mind of 'her' own.

The inspiration for GPS with Benefits came to me when I was in the car with a friend. We made jokes about the GPS device and imagined how it would be if the GPS was actually alive. I immediately knew that these ideas could be turned into a hilarious story.

I won't reveal more, but GPS with Benefits has some twists and turns that you won't see coming and that will have you laughing out loud.

Your turn... What's the weirdest/funniest thing that ever happened to you on the road?

By the way, if you leave a comment on this post, you'll automatically be entered to win an Amazon Gift Card of $25.

Happy reading wherever you are and whenever you get a free chance!!!

But something went wrong. Instead of traveling interdimentionally, Garison has traveled through time ... twice.

Now, he's in something called "The United States of America" and a woman he's never met before is calling herself his wife. It it a hoax? Or, has he somehow changed history?

If so, can he return the world to what he believes is "normal", or must he live in this strange world he created?

Also Part of the Garison Fitch Series

Saving Time

Two years ago Garison Fitch traveled through time and rewrote history. An accident in the eighteenth century created a whole new world, and even gave Garison a wife he had never met before. Now, he’s got a daughter and he’s coming to enjoy this world he created. Until he’s attacked by men masquerading as Indians, and a funeral procession from out of the past enlists his help, and a tree grows from sappling to full-grown in a matter of minutes, threatening his daughter’s very life. Time itself is unraveling and Garison’s trips through time seem to be the cause. Garison must go back in time once again and keep himself from making the original trip that started the problem. But he can’t use his time machine to go back. How does one sew up a rip in time?

Lost Time

Jason Kerrigan and Brownwyn Dalmouth are pilots with the Republic of Texas Army Air Corps. A world war is going on and bombs have just brought an end to Crockett Air Field in south Texas. Jason and Bronwyn, though, are called away from the battle to be test pilots for a new aircraft that-they're told-will bring the war to an end. The experimental craft lives up to expectations in early tests, but then it lands them somewhere it never should have sent them. Another place? Another time? Another dimension? Somehow, they've taken a trip to the future and changed the past. Or did they? The answer to their change of reality may be known to a Justice of the Peace in Colorado named Garison Fitch. To figure it out, though, Garison may have to team up with his least favorite person: Bat Garrett.
